2023 AIA Continental Europe SPRING CONFERENCE – SICILY

AIA Continental Europe is delighted to announce the dates for the Chapter's Spring Conference:

Sicily: Crossroads of Culture

Contemporary design meets Architectural Heritage

From 25th to 29th May 2023, including an optional Monday extension.

Registration - CLOSED

Sicily is our next destination for an overview of the rich history, culture, and architecture that has influenced much of Europe over thousands of years. The AIA CE spring conference will start in Siracusa and the Island of Ortiga, key destinations of sailors from ancient Greece and other Mediterranean ports.  This is also the first of many UNESCO World Heritage sites that we will visit during the conference, historical gems, rich in well preserved stone-paved streets and baroque architecture with a maritime heritage.

Modern architecture and urban design in Italy will be highlighted throughout the conference, starting with the work of Giancarlo De Carlo and the Renzo Piano G124 workshop, and their relationship with the region and city of Catania.

The program includes guided walking tours and lectures by architectural historians and local professionals that will share their insights into the trends that have influenced the development of Sicily over the centuries.  We will rub shoulders with representatives of the Order of Architects in Catania and Siracusa, learning how Sicilian architects are meeting the challenges of modern civilisation while preserving the outstanding local heritage. In addition to the unique networking opportunities with AIA members and international architects practicing throughout Europe and abroad, the Continuing Education content of the program's presentations and site visits will allow attendees to satisfy a major part of their qualification requirements in Europe and the USA (estimated LU's will be communicated along with the final program).

Continuing in the theme of "Frozen Music" (thanks to ABB), we will listen to compositions written by Antonietta Nicastro, a well-known Sicilian pianist and composer during a piano concert that will anchor classical and modern music to the outstanding architecture that is part of the Sicilian heritage.  The Monday extension will include a visit to the "Cantine Barbadoro" in Caltagirone, one of the first net-zero energy buildings in Sicily, designed by Veronica Leone, vice president of the Ordine degli Architetti Catania.

The 2022 conferences organised by AIA  in Porto and London were a huge success.  We hope you will join us in Sicily for what promises to be another unforgettable event in the tradition of AIA European conferences during the past 25+ years.

May is a beautiful season to be in Sicily, so don't hesitate to extend your visit to see more of the region!
