Brussels: Art Nouveau to Contemporary | Spring 2007

International Conference and Chapter Meeting

Art Nouveau to Contemporary | 10-13 May 2007

Brussels was at the turn of the 19th century one of the most prominent cities where Art Nouveau architecture came to maturity. The city was and still is full of beautiful Art Nouveau buildings, from individual residences to warehouses to public buildings.

The tour will include many of the most beautiful and representative of these buildings. The historical city center has been well preserved from the late middle ages. An architectural walking tour will take you around and explain how these beautiful buildings came to being.

Brussels is the host to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) headquarters. In 2004 an up-scale architectural competition was organized to build their new headquarters in Brussels. The winning design was done by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Together, SOM, the designer and NATO the owner/user will give a vivid presentation of this major project from both a designer’s and an international organization’s perspective.

Antwerp and its surroundings have seen in the last years outstanding young architectural currents developing in its midst. Interesting adaptive re-use and bold new buildings have risen in this area of Belgium. The city has also attracted famous architects such as Richard Rogers and Michael Graves. Also, the city itself is quite unparalleled for its remarkable historical architecture.
