Novartis Campus of Knowledge — Basel, Switzerland

26 March 2004

Client Vision to Urban and Architectural Form

In the last few years our industry has departed from its traditional orientation toward production, becoming an increasingly knowledge-oriented activity. With the Novartis Campus project, we hope to address these developments. We aim to transform the St. Johann location… into a site of innovation, knowledge and encounter.

As a visionary undertaking by a corporation, the Novartis Campus Project stands out as a unique example in and of itself. From an urban planning and architectural point of view, the extent of the Campus undertaking must be the most interesting and ambitious project in Switzerland today (perhaps anywhere). As an educational opportunity for those of us in architecture, design and planning, it offers a myriad of possibilities for study, and thus ‘a transfer of knowledge’.

This is a long term project which involves a holistic approach to the redevelopment of many acres of the existing Novartis St. Johann Campus in Basel. Designed to be a ‘city within a city’, there will be new buildings, roads and green spaces, such as parks, lawns and avenues, along with cafes, restaurants and service areas. It is intended that this be a site of innovation, knowledge and encounter and a place for the intensive exchange of skills and ideas.

To that end, Novartis retained an international, multi-disciplinary team of professionals to guide the process and develop the global view. A master plan has been established and the individual projects within it are now being assigned.

At this all-day seminar, you are invited to learn more from Vittorio Lampugnani, Peter Walker, Andreas Schulz, Roger Diener, Adolf Krischanitz and Hannes Wettstein about how the vision is becoming reality and how the individual projects are selected.
